The word Yoga means "Union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit.What is commonly referred to as "yoga" can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word asana, which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses.Asana is only one of the eight "limbs" of yoga, the majority of which are more concerned with mental and spiritual well-being than physical activity. Yoga Types Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga yoga has become extremely popular in recent years. It is a very graceful type of yoga, which produces intense internal heat causing the body to sweat profusely, and in the process, detoxifies muscles and organs. The word ' ashtanga ' comes from two words ' ashta ' meaning eight and ' anga ' meaning limbs. Ashtanga yoga involves the following eight limbs:

  • Yama - principles of ahimsa, satya , asteya , brahmacharya and aparigah.
  • Niyama – personal discipline including shoucha , santosh , tapa, svadhyaya , Ishwar pranidhan.

  • Pratyahara – Withdrawal of Senses

Yoga Types Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is the most popular system of yoga, and it is from this form that several other forms of yoga originated. Hatha yoga is translated as 'Forceful Yoga' because it requires a lot of physical effort. It is done to achieve balance between body and mind. It also attempts to free the more subtle spiritual elements of the mind through physical poses or asanas, pranayam and meditation. It involves four parts:

Yoga Types Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word that describes a broad range of yoga styles. 'Nyasa' in Vinyasa means 'to place' and 'Vi' means 'in a special way'. Vinyasa yoga symbolizes a flowing, dynamic form of yoga, where postures are linked together using breath. The main thing is that all the asanas are done in a rapid sequence and in a series of movements that are synchronized with breathing. In Vinyasa yoga, emphasis is mainly on breathing, and generally, upward movements correlate with inhalation and downward movements with exhalation. The continual movements provide an added cardiovascular benefit, which other traditional forms of yoga do not.

Yoga Types Power Yoga

The asanas in Power yoga are specially designed to help trim down excess fat from different parts of the body. Power yoga is essentially like an aerobic workout. MEDITATION is the art of silencing the mind...eventually reaching a state of NO MIND .Mind by its very nature is chaose...and there is no such thing as a peaceful mind...however only in state of no mind,one experiences inner peace in the midst of worldly turmoil. This elusive inner peace is what attracts so many people to meditation and is a quality everyone can benefit from.
Meditation is slowing down and eventually stopping of continuous bombardment of thoughts by the mind, of cleansing away of deep seated suppressed emotions, of pacifying the passions and returning back to the simplicity of the present moment,cultivating acceptance and being at peace with whatever life brings. In this state of restful being...wisdom arises and divine qualities as love, compassion ,cosmic intelligence and sensitivity of the person flower and bloom .One becomes peaceful,more creative and starts to share love instead of asking for it. Ultimately meditation is SITTING SILENTLY AND DOING NOTHING. Adopting an easy and comfortable pose, one detaches oneself from one's mind and body, watches whatever happens in the mind and body, as though, it were happening to someone else, as one watches a movie - standing aloof.
With regular practice of meditation, the mind gradually disappears n loses its grip over the Self. As the mind disappears totally,the Ego – which is the false sense of self - evaporates and one is united with the Existence. This union with the Infinite Vastness also called the Enlightenment or Nirvana or Moksha has been the ultimate goal of meditators through all times.
